In most situations, painting over your fireplace will leave you with the question of how to clean the fireplace. Fortunately for the DIYer this problem is easily solved.

To clean off layers of ash from your fireplace, you do not have to spend much. To do this you will want a scouring powder with bleach and a good stiff bristle brush. You may want to consider purchasing a bottle of inexpensive fireplace cleaner that is specially formulated to clean brick. Test any new product on a hidden area of brick until you know how it is going to affect your fireplace.

There really isn't any easy way to clean a fireplace, so just scrub until all that gunk comes off. If your fireplace already has paint on the brick you will want to knock off any pieces that may be loose or hanging off. When your brick is clean you will be ready to paint.
